This World Stroke Day, staff and physicians at St. Michael’s are celebrating the official launch of the new Stroke and Neurology Unit that will provide more tailored, specialized care for stroke and neurology patients. Located on the sixth floor of St. Michael’s, the unit is staffed by registered nurses and registered practical nurses who’ve received specialized training to better respond to the unique needs and symptoms of patients recovering from stroke.

We have a wonderful health disciplines team at St. Michael’s who specializes in stroke care and we also have a dedicated team of nurses who have undergone specialized training to help provide the best possible care experiences and outcomes for these patients,” said Julianne Cavanagh, Operations Lead for the Stroke Program at Unity Health Toronto.

Kyshané Fleming, was one of the first nurses hired to work on this unit. She says that the training provided a unique opportunity to learn and grow, and she’s looking forward to the transition. “In this new role, I’ll be able to provide quality care to our patients, drawing on the extensive stroke education and training and working in collaboration with members of the Stroke team. I’ll be able to better advocate for our patients, while enhancing my communications skills and collaborating more seamlessly with families and the interdisciplinary team.

This new unit and specialized training is just one of the many ways that Unity Health’s teams are advancing the model of stroke care and ensuring best practices in all areas of Unity Health Toronto’s world-class specialty care. Happy #WorldStrokeDay!
